DAY 1

Composition

Shapes & Tonal Values

Paint consistency

Composition and shapes are the foundations of any successful painting, with tonal values being the glue that holds it all together!

Combine this with a simple yet highly effective approach to paint consistency and we've got everything we need to really get stuck in!

Through a series of exercises we will focus on how to simply and clearly observe our subject in terms of tone, and how this provides us with a simple watercolour process as basis for creating lively paintings.

We will also look at how tone and process are closely tied to paint consistency.

There will be one demo in the morning and one in the afternoon.

DAY 2

Colour choices

Colour Mixing

Using Colour

Once we have the foundations of shape and tone we can really start to explore and have fun with colour.

Colour mixing is one of the biggest struggles I have found students have, but it needn't be hard or complicated.

We will explore my simple approach to colour mixing. Along with this how to choose colours for different subjects, and how this affects our colour schemes and our paintings.

All though healthy amount of theory to kick off it always comes with very practical application, as well as an emphasis on keeping it light, fun and actually useful!

After some theory and exercises there will be one demo in the morning and one in the afternoon.

A little direction with colour here goes along way! These days often result in plenty of "light bulb" moments!

DAY 3

Edges

Brushwork

Bringing it all together

I describe 'edges' as being the final piece of the watercolour painting puzzle.

Understanding hard, soft and lost edges can immediately jump our paintings to the next level.

As always, with a little guidance, they are not complicated to consider or apply...with immediate results.

With some initial exercises, followed by a morning and afternoon demo, we will explore edges and paint consistency, and with this how we actually use the brush itself.

This day is about building on days one and two, adding a cheeky bonus pricniple, and looking at how to bring it all together!
