Quick Watercolour Birds

Thursday 3rd March 2022

  • Watercolour lends itself perfectly to capturing characterful birds in a quick and expressive way!

  • We will be looking at working on a small scale around 10"x12" and using lots of colour, lots of movement and lots of lovely brushstrokes - plus the odd little touch of detail where needed

  • We will be looking at working in a quick and expressive way and aiming to get through a good number of paintings in the day

  • I will demonstrate a painting stage by stage. From drawing, first layer to second layer. Students will follow this process on their own paintings stage by stage (follow my demo or choose their own reference)

  • The rest of the day will then be lots more painting! Hurray...This will be guided individual painting with one on one time as much as possible

  • As well as materials, watercolour process and techniques; we will look specifically at how to construct and draw out birds, what to look for in our subject, how to translate our reference into a good painting, capturing gesture and character, and how to bring our birds to life!

The Most Important thing in Watercolours

Friday 4th March 2022

  • What is the one principle that is exclusive to working in watercolours?  (and also the most important one for the medium)

  • This will be a general watercolour workshop in terms of subject, but we will be focusing heavily on....paint consistency

  • For me this is the key to getting to grips with watercolour. We will take a really close look at understanding the level of wetness on the page and the amount of water and pigment in the brush

  • We will look at how these different properties interact with each other and when and how to use them in a watercolour painting

  • We will be focusing a lot on the actual process of building up a watercolour painting

  • There will be a short theory section followed by a quick wildlife demo in the morning. There will be a second short demo of a snow scene in the afternoon

  • The rest of time will be guided individual painting time, with one on one time as much as possible

  • Students can follow suit from the demos, or paint their own thing

  • Along with materials, watercolour process and techniques; we will also cover the usual principles of light and shadow, what to look for in our subject, how to translate our reference into a good painting.

Colour Mixing Confidence in Watercolours

Saturday 5th March 2022

  • Probably the topic that I get the most questions about, and that people struggle the most with, is colour mixing

  • Whilst it can be quite an elusive part of painting we can actually simply break colour mixing down into a very logical process and hopefully take most (if not all) of the guess work out of it

  • We will be looking at colour theory but in a very light and a very practical way. It doesn't have to be complicated

  • We will look at the theory behind mixing any colour you want, as well as how to choose colour for specific paintings

  • Watercolour mixing is particularly tricky as we don't have white. However understanding the colour wheel can really help with this

  • This day is basically designed to give plenty of easy to understand, practical info, plus a few tricks and tips

  • There will be a theory introduction, with a few exercises, followed by a demo, and the rest of the day for individual painting

  • Individual painting time will be guided with one on one time as much as possible

  • Along with materials, watercolour process and techniques; we will also cover the usual principles of light and shadow, what to look for in our subject, how to translate our reference into a good painting.

Colour Mixing for Acrylics & Oils

Thursday & Friday 24th & 25th March 2022 (2 day course)

£140

Students are welcome to bring either medium, or both mediums if they wish

  • This 2 day course will work equally well for acrylic and oil painter as all the principals are the same

  • This is probably the most common sticking point for most people, but some basic theory and a few tricks and tips can go along, long way!

  • Over two days we can really immerse into the theory of colour mixing (don't worry, nothing too heavy going) in order to pull out the practical useable information and then how to apply it

  • We will look at everything from the colour wheel, and understanding our own colours, through to how to look for and see colour differently, and then how to mix any colour you want using a very logical process

  • We will also look at choosing colours for specific paintings as well as working with limited palettes

  • There will be a mixture of theory, exercises, demos and of course plenty of individual painting

  • I will be demonstrating the exercises and theory in acrylics for ease. The demo on the first day will be in oils and the second day will be in acrylics. A lot of the techniques and processes are surprisingly transferrable and any differences can be homed in on during one one guidance

  • Individual painting time will be guided with one on one time as much as possible
