The Demo

Painting Wildlife Portraits is always wonderful fun, but trying to capture the gesture and character of an animal when it's moving is a whole different thing!​

​

I do feel that the natural properties of watercolour lend themselves to this subject very well. Especially when combined with some basic knowledge of anatomy, structure and how different animals move!

​

It's amazing what we can cover in 2 hours. We will look at all of the below (and more)

​

• 2 paintings; one slightly longer and larger format, the second a shorter, slightly different approach

• Some simple comparative anatomy that can really help capture almost any animal

• Breaking the subject into shapes and "shape stacking"

• Looking for gesture and character

• How to change and exaggerate the subject to create even more exciting compositions

• How to capture the essence and character of the animal - all in an expressive and fun way

Plus:

• All the materials - including colours and their properties

• Techniques of watercolour from wet into wet to dry brush and everything in between

• Paint consistency: the one thing above all else that I believe is the "secret" to watercolour - we will look at the "watercolour clock" and it's applications

• Colour mixing

• Creating big bold brushstrokes

• Where to let loose a little and where to bring in more refinement

• How to interpret our subject - what to put in, what to leave out

• What to do with backgrounds

I very much welcome questions typed into the chat throughout the demo. I do my best to answer as we go but I will also open up the floor to "Questions and Answers" if people want to un-mute (at the end of the first half and the end of the demo)
