Let your creativity flow and make the most of the spectacular Devonshire Coastline!

Stay at Westcott Barton retreat and join Tom for 3 days of painting.

Tom will hold a 3 day workshop at the retreat, painting in the beautiful and extensive grounds of Westcott Barton, with 1 day out and about to paint & sketch the stunning North Devon Coastline.

Not only is the 95 acre estate an artists dream (you could get lost for weeks), the venue is quick trip to some fantastic coastline.

You will not fail to be inspired by both and you are going to have a huge amount of fun getting to grips with translating our wonderful surroundings into pieces of art.

At the heart of retreat will be translating to wonder of what we see around us into sketches and paintings.

Tom will demonstrate in Acrylics & Watercolour but is more than happy to teach, guide & advise whatever medium you choose to bring.

We will be focusing on the 3 key principles of Composition, Tone and Colour, with short demos from Tom to show these principles in action. Whatever the subject, one of Tom’s real loves is looking for the light and atmosphere, so this will always be a central theme too.

Guided one on one time will be an opportunity to look at these principles in relation to your chosen medium.

The aim is to be out in the garden and grounds, however if the weather is really against us, or for those who may prefer it at times, there is a fantastic studio space.

Upon arrival on the Monday afternoon, at around 3pm, you will be greeted by the team at Westcott Barton.

To kick the retreat off the rest of the afternoon will be spent settling in and getting to know the rest of the group and tutor; as well as a short introduction and demonstration from Tom before a group dinner.

Breakfast will be served at 8.30am and students will then gather in the studio at around 9.30am.

Days 1 and 3 will be spent on the grounds. On day 2 a minibus will drive the group to various easy to access destinations on the nearby coast to sketch and paint.

Tea, coffee and biscuits are freely available to help yourself to during studio sessions.

For the days on-site lunch will be served at 1pm with afternoon tutorials commencing from 2-5pm, followed by a group dinner at 6.30pm. On the day out a packed lunch will be provided.

Our courses are limited to 10 participants per retreat to ensure your tutor has the ability to provide you with personal advice and support during your time here.

Painting Media

All media very welcome: painting, sketching, line & wash- whatever you fancy.

Skill Level

All abilities from beginner to advanced are welcome.

Students will need to bring all of their own equipment.

Tom is very happy to advise in detail on all aspects, including colour choices and what to expect, via email or over the phone.

As a general overview you will need your chosen medium and all equipment associated with it.

Depending on how you like to work, you might require some sort of standing easel, tripod or pochade box to work on. Some people like to work on their laps, especially with watercolour and sketching.

You may also want to bring a foldout stool or chair if you prefer to work sitting down.

All in all have a think about what medium/s you plan to work with and how you like to work.

Tom can be contacted to discuss and advise regarding equipment and materials via: or 07980 611 267.
